Wichita State scored eight runs in the first and three runs in the ninth to defeat Missouri State 11-9 in game two of a three-game series.
Tyler Baker went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Garrett Bayliff went 3-for-5. Reliever Aaron LaBrie earned the win as he went 4.1 shutout innings. Brandon Peterson pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the season.
The Shockers exploded for eight runs on 10 hits in the top of the first inning against Bear starter Jon Harris. Tanner Dearman led off with a walk and after a single from Garrett Bayliff, Tyler Baker singled to drive in Dearman for a 1-0 lead. Casey Gillaspie followed with an RBI single and after a groundout, Micah Green singled to drive in Baker for a 3-0 lead. Mikel Mucha, Tanner Kirk and Taylor Doggett all singled before Dearman’s single hit Doggett for the second out of the inning. Bayliff and Baker both singled for the second time in the inning and the Shockers led 8-0 after one.
The Bears got one back in the bottom of the first. Tate Matheny and Eric Cheray both singled to lead off the inning and Matheny scored after a single and an error to cut the lead to 8-1.
MSU used three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch to add three more runs in the second and a leadoff double led to another run in the third to cut the lead to 8-5.
Four more Bear runs in the fourth gave MSU a 9-8 lead.
Dearman led off the ninth with an infield single and advanced to second on a single to left field from Bayliff. Baker sacrificed both runners into scoring position and after an intentional walk to Gillaspie to load the bases, Erik Harbutz drove a ball to right field for a sacrifice fly to tie the score at nine. Bayliff and Gillaspie scored on a Bear error to put the Shocks in front for the final score of 11-9.
