Thunder Salvage Point, Lose to Mallards in Shootout

Wichita climbed back from a two-goal deficit to salvage a point on Sunday afternoon, losing in a shootout to the Quad City Mallards by the final of 3-2 at the I-Wireless Center. Neil Trimm led the way for the Thunder, scoring his second of the season. Wichita falls to 1-3-1 and will head home next week for a three-game set with the Missouri Mavericks.

Quad City got on the board first in the second period with a pair of goals in a span of 2:42 from Eddie Effinger and Obi Aduba. Wichita answered on the power play at 5:47 to cut the lead to one. Trimm pounced on a rebound on the left side of the net, making it a 2-1 affair.

In the third, Andrew Martens recorded his first of the season to tie the game at two with a blast from the blue line at 3:28. Both teams had some good scoring chances down the stretch, but both goalies stood tall and forced the game into extra time.

After five minutes of overtime, a shootout was needed to decide the game. Wichita's lone goal in the shootout came from Chad Painchaud in round two as he snapped it off the right post and in. Quad City got goals from Marcello Ranello in round three and the game-winner from Obi Aduba in round five to grab the extra point, winning 3-2.

Wichita was 1-for-8 with the man advantage while the Mallards were 0-for-2. Trimm had a goal and an assist while Chad Painchaud added an assist, scoring in every game this season. Kevin Regan made 24 saves while Joe Palmer stopped 36 of 38 shots he faced.

Wichita returns home on Friday, November 2nd to take on Missouri for the first time this season. The Thunder face the Mavericks three straight times next weekend as they travel up to Independence, MO on Saturday and come back to Wichita on Sunday, November 4th.
