Wichita's late comeback bid was halted on Saturday night, losing to the Bloomington Blaze 3-2 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum for the second-straight night. Bloomington leads the season-series 2-0 with the last two games taking place in the Air Capital. To close out the road trip, the Thunder will head north to take on the Quad City Mallards on Sunday, October 28th at 4 p.m.
Bloomington jumped out to 1-0 lead at 9:46 of the first period on a Travis Granbois goal. Later in the period, Gregor Hanson was hauled down trying to split two defenders and was awarded a penalty shot. He was unable to put it on net, however, and the Thunder trailed 1-0 heading into the first intermission despite out-shooting the Blaze 17-8 through the first 20 minutes
Jeff Winchester and Jesse Dudas added to the Blaze lead early in the third period to make it 3-0. The Thunder made hard charge with 10 minutes left as Dave Inman stole the puck in the neutral zone, led an odd-man break and muscled one through Pier Pelletier to cut the lead to 3-1. Less than five minutes later, Ian Lowe slid it through Pelletier to make it a one-goal game, 3-2. With just over a minute left, RG Flath drew a penalty and the Thunder had a six-on-four man advantage with goalie Kevin Regan pulled for an extra attacker. The Blaze held on and would not allow the equalizer, winning 3-2.
Wichita out-shot Bloomington, 48-32 and had at least 15 shots each period. The Thunder power play entered the game number one in the league, but went 0-for-4 while the Blaze power play unit was 1-for-2.
Wichita finishes their three-game road trip tomorrow afternoon in Moline, IL before returning home on Friday, November 2nd against heated-rival, Missouri at 7:05 p.m.
