Todd Griffith added a pair of goals while Les Reaney tallied two helpers in the victory. The Thunder increase its playoff winning streak to nine games and set a new CHL Playoff record. Wichita takes a 1-0 series lead with Game 2 taking place on Thursday night.
The first period had a championship feel to it with both teams creating good scoring opportunities. Allen had the first wave at the start while Wichita finished off the period outshooting Allen 12-5. Todd Griffith scored his first goal of the post-season at 16:47 when he caught a pass in the slot, got tied up by a defenseman and somehow was able to slide the puck past Aaron Dell for the first goal of the series.
Griffith added his second goal of the game three minutes into the second period shortly after an Allen goal was disallowed after being kicked in with a skate. He caught a nice board pass from Travis Wight, came into the zone up the left wing and snapped a shot over Dell's shoulder to make it 2-0.
Allen benefited from a power play and cut the lead four minutes into the final period. Trevor Ludwig caught a centering pass from Todd Robinson and buried it past Torrie Jung to make it 2-1. 33 seconds later, RG Flath gave the Thunder a two-goal lead back with a drive from just inside the Allen line to make it 3-1. Chad Painchaud added an insurance goal with seven minutes remaining, beating Dell to the short side after streaking down the left wing past a defender and Thunder took Game 1, 4-1.
Including the final two games of the regular season, Wichita has won 11-straight games after tonight. Griffith recorded his first two goals of the post-season while Kevin Young added an assist. Jung improved to 9-0 in the playoffs, making 15 saves on 16 shots. Dell took the loss, stopping 26 of 30 shots he saw.
Wichita went 0-for-4 on the power play while Allen was 1-for-5.
