Wichita State earned a thrilling come from behind victory to defeat Butler 3-2 for the first win of the season. The Shockers defeated Butler by scores of 20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 17-15.
Kristin Byers had 14 kills and five blocks, while Mikaela Raudsepp had 14 kills and 15 digs. Emily Hiebert led the Shockers with 52 assists and 20 digs, while Dani Mostrom had 26 digs.
Butler jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first set, but two kills from Mikaela Raudsepp pulled WSU within 6-3. The two teams went back-and-forth, but the Shockers could not get closer than four late in the set as Butler won 25-20.
The Shockers used a service ace from Gabi Mostrom to take a 5-3 lead in the second set, but the Bulldogs answered with three-straight points to take a 6-5 lead. Butler increased the lead to 14-9 with a block, but back-to-back kills from Kristin Byers cut the lead to 21-18. The Bulldogs scored four of the final six points to take the set 25-20.
The two teams traded points in the third set until the Shockers used a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. The Bulldogs tied it at 16, but the Shockers used a block by Byers and Hiebert to go in front 22-19. The Shockers won the set 25-21 on a kill by MaryAshton Floyd.
The Shockers raced out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth set after a service ace from Gabi Mostrom. The Bulldogs to within one at 16-15, but the Shockers used kills from Byers, Raudsepp and Reilly down the stretch to win 25-20.
WSU took a 7-4 lead in the fifth set after a kill and ace from Raudsepp and a kill from Reilly. Butler came back to tie the score at 11 and used two-straight kills to go in front 14-12. WSU fought off two match points to tie it back up at 14. Butler reached match point again at 15-14, but the Shocks scored the final three points on kills from Raudsepp, Reilly and Floyd to win 17-15.
The Shockers are next in action on Thurs., Sept. 4 against Baylor in San Marcos, Texas.
