Southern Illinois starter Cody Forsythe held the Shockers to one run on seven hits to lead the Salukis to a 5-1 win over Wichita State on the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Tanner Dearman went 2-for-4 with a double for the Shockers, while Mikel Mucha drove in the lone run. Tyler Baker finished 2-for-3.
Starter Cale Elam took the loss as he pitched four innings and allowed three run on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Erik Harbutz led off the second inning with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Baker. With two outs, Mikel Mucha doubled over the left fielder’s head to give the Shocks a 1-0 lead.
SIU answered with three runs in the fourth. Austin Montgomery walked to lead off the inning and with one out, SIU used four-straight singles to take a 3-1 lead.
SIU led off the ninth with a single and after a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Ryan Casillas doubled down the left field line to give SIU a 4-1 lead. A single from Cody Daily drove in Montgomery for a 5-1 advantage.
The Shockers will next play Creighton at 9 a.m. on Wed., May 22 in an elimination game.
