The 2013 Wichita State baseball schedule features 12 games against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams along with 40 home games, head coach Gene Stephenson announced Nov. 2.
"We will have our work cut out for us starting with our very first series against Pittsburgh," Stephenson said. "Our early season schedule features many home games and we hope to get off to a good start, but the weather will be a factor. We have non-conference opponents that will test us and in our conference we have four home series this season and if we play well, we can compete for the league championship."
The Shockers begin the 2013 season with 18 of their first 19 games at Eck Stadium. WSU opens up with Pittsburgh, Feb. 15-17, in Wichita before traveling to face 2012 NCAA Tourney participant Oral Roberts in Tulsa on Feb. 19. The Golden Eagles return to Wichita for games on Feb. 26 and March 5.
WSU will also face Delaware for four games (Feb. 22-24), Fordham (March 1-3), Nebraska-Omaha (March 6), Texas-Pan American (March 8-10) and North Dakota (March 12-13) during the homestand.
The Shockers hit the road for the next eight games as WSU travels to Long Beach State for a three-game series March 15-17. WSU then travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, to play a five-game series with Hawaii.
Next for the Shockers is a 10-game homestand beginning with Air Force (March 26-27). The Shockers open up Missouri Valley Conference play with Illinois State on March 29 and then host baseball powerhouse Arizona State for a two-game series April 2-3. Rounding out the homestand is a three-game series with 2012 NCAA Tourney participant Indiana State (April 5-7).
The final two 2012 NCAA Tourney participants on WSU's schedule are Missouri State and Creighton. The Shockers travel to Springfield, Mo., May 3-5 and host the Bluejays May 10-12.
Other teams that will visit Eck Stadium in 2012 include Kansas State (April 16), Evansville (April 19-21), Kansas (May 7), Oklahoma State (May 14) and Northwestern (May 16-18).
Wichita State will travel to Normal, Ill., for the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at Duffy Bass Field, May 21-25.
