Brent Clevlen was one of eight Wichita Wingnuts’ players to be selected to the South Division all-star squad a week ago in Winnipeg. After participating in the game itself and the home run derby, the former big leaguer has put on a derby of his own in the four contests since, leading to the outfielder being named as the American Association Pointstreak Player of the Week.
Clevlen headed into the three-day break with some productive performances in Amarillo, but since returning to play on the northern part of the Wingnuts 17-game road trip, he has been almost unstoppable. In three games against St. Paul and one versus Fargo-Moorhead the veteran has gone 12-18 at the plate and driven in 11 runs. Clevlen has four home runs in the last three ball games, including a two-homer game at St. Paul’s Midway Stadium on Friday. He has been on base with regularity, leading to a total of six runs scored during the span.
The third-year Wingnut has his name all over the league’s leader board in a multitude of offensive categories. He is atop the American Association in extra-base hits and total bases and among the top five in batting average, doubles, RBI, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and hits. Clevlen is currently hitting .360 on the season with 26 doubles, three triples and 13 home runs to go with 58 RBI.
Clevlen joins J.T. Wise, who had his contract purchased by the Texas Rangers, and starting pitcher Jon Link as Wingnuts that have been honored by the league with a weekly award during the 2014 campaign.
