With the win, the Jets reach 20 victories on the season and are now 20-5. NU can still win a share of the Heartland Conference regular season championship as Arkansas-Fort Smith lost, 80-62, to St. Edward’s tonight. Newman is 9-4 in the conference, while UAFS finishes 10-4.
Traylor scored the game-winning basket off a missed corner jumper from Marquis Cuyler. After a review, the hoop was good with 0.4 seconds left on the clock.
McMurry tied the score at 70-70 with 9 seconds remaining on a DJ Stennis layup. The War Hawks had a chance to tie the game with 40 seconds left, but Takoby Jackson missed two free throws to keep the score 70-68. The Jets had a 70-66 advantage after a Traylor jumper at 2:04 and a Cuyler free throw at 1:35.
After trailing 38-30 at halftime, the Jets closed to within one point, 40-39, at the 17:39 mark on a Traylor 3. With the Jets down 63-56 at the 7:53 mark, NU made a quick run to tie the game at 63-63 with 6:23 left. Two Frankie Drayton free throws tied the score.
A close first half saw the Jets take a 10-9 advantage at the 14:12 mark on a Ryan McCarthy 3-pointer. With the Jets up 22-21 after an Acuay layup at 6:40 in the half, the War Hawks opened up a 10-point advantage at 36-26 with 1:07 left until halftime. McMurry was up 38-30 at halftime.
Traylor scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range. He added four rebounds. Acuay scored 15 points, and Ryan McCarthy poured in 11 points.
The Jets shot 57.4 percent (27-47) from the field and went 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) from 3-point distance. McMurry went 27-of-57 from the field (47.4 percent).
