the Kansas City Royals have announced the death of long-time broadcaster Fred White.

White died Wednesday at a Kansas City hospice after a battle with melanoma. His death came just a day after he announced his retirement from the organization.

White spent nearly 40 years with the Royals. He was the voice of Kansas State athletics before joining the team and had been a sports anchor for a Topeka television station.

Funeral arrangements for White are pending.
