When the Kansas Jayhawks take the court Friday to play Western Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Kansas City, they're meeting a program that has a rich basketball tradition of its own as well as a Kansas connection.

Lawrence Brenneman, an assistant coach for the Hilltopers, is someone a lot of people in Kansas know. The Hillsboro native is excited to bring his team close to home.

"Personally, it's great just because my family will be able to be at the game and drive down from Hillsboro to see us play," Brenneman said.

He began his coacing career at Tabor College before moving to the high school level to serve as head coach at Wichita West from 1988 to 1989 and at Andover High School from 1990 to 1996.

Brenneman returned to the collegiate level in 1997 when he became an assistant at Seward County Community College. His tenure there included an appearance in the semifinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in 1998.

Does the state of Kansas hold a coaching spot that could one day bring Coach Brenneman home?

"Well, I've coached all over," he said. "I've been in New York also, coaching at Binghampton University. So, at this point in my life, wherever the opportunity is, that's where I'm going to be coaching."
