KU Gets Approval For New Track, Soccer & Softball Stadiums

January 15, 2013

The University of Kansas received approval from the city commission to begin construction on a $39 million complex that will include track and field, soccer and softball facilities.

Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger announced Tuesday that the school had received the all-clear to begin construction on the facilities west of campus.

Preliminary plans call for a track and field stadium with 7,000 permanent seats and room for 3,000 temporary seats. The new home of the Kansas Relays would mean the existing track could be removed from Memorial Stadium, where the Jayhawks play football.

The new soccer stadium will seat 2,500 and the softball stadium will seat 1,500.

School officials hope to have the facilities ready by spring 2014.
