A Shawnee Mission West football player who suffered a stroke during Thursday night's football game has passed away.

Research Medical Center officials said Andre Maloney passed away on Friday.

"While the family greatly appreciates the concern, thoughts, and prayers of family, friends, and the community, they ask that the public and media respect their privacy at this time," according to a statement from Maloney's family.

A district spokesperson said Maloney collapsed on the sideline after scoring a touchdown on a long pass.

Two doctors and an athletic trainer went to Maloney's aid, the spokesperson said. An ambulance was called, and Maloney was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

"We saw him come to the sideline and he was holding his face, he said he couldn't feel the side of his body and he kind of stumbled a bit and collapsed," said Maloney's friend and teammate Mario Louis. "A couple of our players grabbed him after he stumbled and lowered him to the ground."

He was later moved to Research Medical Center where he passed away.

Maloney played offense and defense. He had committed to going to the University of Kansas next year.

A prayer vigil was held for Maloney after school on Friday.

The Vikings lost to Leavenworth 37-34 on Thursday.
