Playing their third game in five days the usually fast starting Shockers started the game a bit sluggish as they headed into the first media timeout trailing 7-6, with starting center Ehimen Orukpe saddled to the bench after picking up two quick fouls before the 18:00 mark.
Evan Wessel's 3-pointer from the right corner followed by four consecutive points from Cleanthony Early gave Wichita State (4-0) their first significant offensive push of the game taking a 23-14 lead with 5:26 remaining in the half. The Shockers offense found its stride from there with Demetric Williams consecutive breakaway finishes, the first a two-handed dunk and the second a layup around a Howard defender, to give Wichita State a 30-14 advantage with 3:00 remaining.
The Shockers closed the half on a 21-0 run over the final 7:01 capped by Nick Wiggins 3-pointer with thirty-two seconds remaining to take a 37-14 lead. Wichita State forced 15 Howard (0-3) turnovers in the half leading to 18 points. Wichita State showed their collective depth in the half with the bench outscoring Howard's bench 21-0.
Mike Phillips 12 points led Howard who outscored WSU 36-32 in the second half. Alphonso Leary added 11 while Simuel Frazier and Prince Okoroh each chipped in 10.
