Conner Frankamp's record-clinching jumper
Wichita North senior Conner Frankamp set a new City League scoring record on Friday night, amassing 2,233 points for his career after a 37 point performance in North's 52-40 win over Bishop Carroll.
Frankamp passed his future Kansas Jayhawks teammate, Perry Ellis of Wichita Heights, to secure the record.
To chants of "Con-ner Fran-kamp!" in his home gym at North High, Frankamp received a standing ovation as the game immediately went to timeout following the record-clinching mid-range jump shot from the top of the key.
"As soon as it left his hand, I knew it was in," said Frankamp's coach, Gary Squires. "The arch and trajectory of the ball, it was really sweet to see that go down because he's worked hard."
"To be the all-time scoring leader is a dream come true and an honor. I thank my teammates for that, and the coaching staff, and everybody around me," said Frankamp, who admitted that the looming record had weighed on him mentally over the past few days.
But on a night when he had already won Homecoming King at halftime, he couldn't do anything else but make history - although many questioned whether or not he would get the 6 points needed in the final 4 minutes of the game. As he has repeatedly proven, those points can happen quickly, with 7 coming in a span of 2:39.
"I just wanted to win tonight and it was a tough game. It was Homecoming so we had to win tonight. It was a good night for sure," he said.
Wichita North will be in action again on Thursday against West at North's gym.
