Indians manager Eric Wedge has a new three-year
contract extension through 2010. It's kind of an early reward for
having his ballclub near the top in the American League Central.

Cleveland failed to make the postseason in Wedge's first four
years on the bench. His current deal runs through the end of this
season. The club held an option for 2008 and 2009. Wedge played baseball at Wichita State, and was the catcher for the team that won the College World Series.

Cleveland's 54-and-37 record is just a half-game shy of
division-leading Detroit and has the Tribe on top in the A-L
wild-card chase.

The Indians were expected to contend this season and they have.
Cleveland has spent 63 days in first place while bouncing back from
a 78-and-84 record and fourth-place finish in 2006.
