6-10-07 - The Wichita State baseball team made a late charge in their second game against U-C-I on Sunday, but it wasn't quite enough to get the job done.
Down 2-0 in the 8th inning, Tyler Hill woke up the team with a single up the middle. Then Coach Gene Stephenson elected to send Ryan Jones to pinch-hit for Dusty Coleman. Jones had been hitting just .140 on the season, but the freshman from Bishop Carroll took the 2-2 pitch straight up the middle to put two on with two out.
Andy Dirks then stepped up to the plate and nailed a shot to shallow left field. A diving catch saved the day for U-C Irvine and the inning ended with the Shockers still down two runs.
The 9th inning turned out to be just as dramatic after a close call by the first base umpire was reversed, allowing Damon Sublette to stay on 1st after a base hit. The Shockers would load up the bases, but couldn't get anyone to the plate.
Irvine's Bryan Peterson took a 3-2 pitch deep into center field in the bottom of the 9th. That scored a runner from 2nd base, ending the Shockers season.
U-C-I, who didn't even have a baseball team just seven short years ago, advances to the College World Series for the first time ever.
