The Wichita Wingnuts lost 6-3 to the Lincoln Saltdogs on Sunday evening at Haymarket Park.
The Wingnuts scored first for the third time in the series when Patrick Brooks singled home a run in the top of the second. Later in the inning, Josh Horn drove in a run on an RBI groundball.
After Lincoln cut the Wingnuts' lead in half in the fifth, Kelly Hunt lead off the top of the sixth with a long home run to left center field, his 11th of the season to set a new Wingnuts' single season record.
Lincoln came back though with three runs in their half of the sixth, highlighted by a two run home run from Brandon Jones. Lincoln scored twice more against Wichita starter Will Savage in the bottom of the seventh. Savage allowed six runs on eight hits in seven innings of work while taking the loss.
The Wingnuts brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth against closer Chris Thompson before the right-hander earned his 19th save of the season.
The loss was the Wingnuts' sixth straight on the road. Wichita has dropped eight of its last nine road games.
Wichita now sends a league-high seven All-Stars to the American Association All-Star Game on Tuesday night at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, TX. Catcher Joe Muich, shortstop Josh Horn, left fielder Greg Porter, and designated hitter Kelly Hunt will start for the North Division. The four hitters are joined by starting pitchers Derek Blacksher, Adam Cowart, and Gabe Medina on the North's roster.
The Wingnuts return from a four-day break from regular season action on Friday, July 24th when they open a three-game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries at 7:05 p.m. "Super Fan" will be on hand at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, courtesy of Hajoca, 360 Wichita, and KFDI. Fans can also receive autographs from their favorite Wingnuts players after the game.
