A Central Hockey League franchise official says the Oklahoma City Blazers have suspended operations after failing to renew a lease to play downtown.

Assistant general manager Josh Evans says the decision not to accept a three-year lease renewal to play in the Ford Center or the Cox Center was a business decision and not because city officials weren't accommodating.

According to city documents, Oklahoma City officials have filed paperwork clearing the way to start negotiations with a prospective American Hockey League franchise. The city council is scheduled to vote on the issue Tuesday.

The Blazers organization has informed the CHL and the players will now be free agents.

The team had a 17-season run in Oklahoma City, winning the CHL title in 1996 and 2001. The Blazers frequently led all North American minor-league hockey teams in attendance.
