Creighton (30-24) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back as Bluejay starter Brandon Koenigstein went seven innings, allowing no hits in an 11-0 run-rule victory over Wichita State (28-25) on Thursday night at Eck Stadium.
Shocker starter Max Hutson struggled in his third start of the season. Robbie Knight led off the game with a double and scored on a Darin Ruf single. After a hit batter, Nick Becker walked to load the bases for Carson Vitale. Vitale picked up his 29th RBI of the season on a four-pitch walk to give CU a 2-0 lead.
That proved to be more than enough for Koenigstein, whose only blemish on the night was hitting Tyler Grimes to leadoff the fourth. He was erased just one batter later when Cody Lassley grounded into a double-play.
With a 5-0 lead the Bluejays blew the game open in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on seven hits. Knight, Ruf, Vicente Cafaro, T.J. Roemmich and Becker had RBI hits in the inning that saw three Shocker pitchers.
Just one night after scoring 15 runs against Indiana State, the Shockers struggled at the plate against Koenigstein who finished the night with seven strikeouts.
Elliot Soto robbed Taylor Brown of a single with a diving stop and throw to first in the sixth.
Lassley and Clint McKeever flew out to end the game and preserve the no-hitter in the seventh.
Despite the loss the Shockers can make Saturday's championship game with a win against No. 6 Illinois State. Both teams are 1-1 in the tournament after the Redbirds defeated Indiana State, 7-3, Thursday afternoon.
First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
