The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission is pleased to announce an NBA exhibition game coming to Wichita featuring the New Orleans Hornets and the Orlando Magic. The game will be played at Wichita State’s Charles Koch Arena on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 7:00 pm Central Standard Time.
The New Orleans Hornets feature Chris Paul, one of the top young players in the league. Paul finished 5th in MVP voting in 2009 and recently won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics. Also joining Paul on the Hornets are All Stars David West and Peja Stojakovic. Former University of Kansas standout Julian Wright just finished his 2nd year with the Hornets.
The Orlando Magic feature another MVP candidate in Dwight Howard. Howard recently finished 4th in MVP voting, was voted the NBA defensive player of the year and was a teammate of Paul’s at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Howard, known in the league as “Superman”, led the league in rebounds and blocked shots. Howard is joined on the Magic by fellow All Star Rashard Lewis.
The New Orleans Hornets were recently eliminated in the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs. They finished the 2008-09 season with a 49-33 record. The Orlando Magic are currently in the 2nd round of the playoffs taking on the Boston Celtics. They finished the regular season with a 59-23 record and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1st round of the playoffs.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is North America's professional men's basketball league, composed of thirty teams: twenty-nine in the United States and one in Canada. It is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB), which is recognized by the International Basketball Federation as the National Governing Body (NGB) for basketball in the United States. The NBA is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, which include Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Hockey League (NHL).
This event is brought to Wichita in a joint effort between the Wichita Sports Commission and Sports Week Event, LLC. A full week of events will take place leading up to the NBA game including “Read to Achieve” with local elementary schools and a “Success Seminar” with area high schools.
Tickets for this event are currently on sale through the Wichita State University Ticket Office. You can purchase tickets by calling 978-3267 or by logging on to www.wichitasports.com. Ticket prices range from $10 to $100. Almost 7,000 of the tickets for the game are priced $25 and under.
