Indiana State (29-14, 11-4 MVC) sent 11 men to the plate in a six-run eighth as the Sycamores evened the series with the Wichita State baseball team (24-21, 8-6 MVC) with a 9-4 win in game two on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Mitch Caster led the Shocker offense with two RBI on a 1-for-3 effort at the plate, while Tyler Grimes went 3-for-5 for WSU. Brian Jett went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Sycamores, while Tyler Graham drove in a pair as well.
Grimes led off the Shocker first with a double down the right line and came around to score when Chris O'Brien drew a bases-loaded walk to give WSU a 1-0 lead. Will Baez came home on a Caster ground ball to give the Shockers a 2-0 edge after one.
Indiana State tied the game with solo home runs in the second and the fourth off Shocker starter Jordan Cooper (6-5).
Caster's one-out single in the fifth gave the Shockers a 3-2 lead, scoring Baez who led the inning off with a walk.
Indiana State got three singles in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3, chasing Cooper from the contest. The starter worked 7.1 innings, scattering 10 hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 102 pitches. Cooper was charged with five earned runs in the losing effort.
The Sycamores then broke the game open with five more hits, as the Shocker bullpen allowed three runs after Cooper was chased from the game.
Indiana State's six-run eighth proved to be the difference, as the Shockers couldn't produce a big rally late. WSU posted four errors in the ninth allowing the Sycamores to score an unearned run to add to the lead.
The teams wrap up the series at 1 p.m., Sunday.
