A player from the Bakersfield Blitz collapsed on the sidelines, early in the first 15-minute quarter of Saturday night's Wichita Stealth football game. After being transported from the Kansas Coliseum, the player was pronounced dead at a Wichita hospital.
Julian Yearwood was a linebacker for the Bakersfield Blitz of Arena Football Two, Arena Football's developmental league. Yearwood had been playing both offense and defense in the game against the Wichita Stealth and was sitting on the bench when he collapsed. Accodring to league officials, Yearwood had just consumed two energy drinks when he lost consciousness.
As other players kneeled and prayed, emergency workers tried unsuccessfully to revive him for about 15 to 20 minutes in the Blitz bench area before placing him in an ambulance. The game was immediately called off.
A spokesman says Arena Football will wait for an autopsy report before discussing any potential cause of death.
Yearwood played football at the University of Nevada-Reno and was in his third season with the Blitz.
