Roy Williams has returned to his alma mater.

Williams has left the University of Kansas to become North Carolina's head basketball coach. His return to Chapel Hill ends a 15-year run at Kansas in which the Jayhawks won nine conference championships and made 14 NCAA tournament appearances.

Williams replaces Matt Doherty, who coached the Tar Heels for three years.

Williams was an assistant at North Carolina under Dean Smith and was also a candidate for the job three years ago, when Doherty was hired. He has reached 400 wins faster than any other coach in Division One history.

His current record is 418-and-101.
