Gene Stephenson returns to Wichita one day after saying he would take the Oklahoma coaching job.">
July 12--Many coaches have come and gone. Gene Stephenson has been a constant at Wichita State for 28 years. "He's been the coach all my life, and so to see someone else standing in the third base box for Wichita State would just be weird," said WSU Graduate student Jason Ault.
Some say they saw the turn of events coming. "I knew it was going to happen...knew he was going to stay," said WSU student Heather Hess.
But what's fascinating is that in a world of round the clock news, and this being a breaking news event and all over television and on the newstand...Many at the WSU Student Center were unaware of the coach's change of heart.
At Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, the truth is not everyone thinks Stephenson is doing the right thing. ¶
"I think it's nuts. He might as well go. I don't know what he's waiting on," said one fan.
