MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman forward Michael Beasley earned Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week honors for the second time this season on Monday after averaging 28.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in wins over Savannah State and Oklahoma.
Beasley is just the second Kansas State player to earn Big 12 Player of the Week twice in a season and the first since Jeremiah Massey did it two times during the 2004-05 season. The player of the week award is also Beasley’s fourth this season after he earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors on Nov. 12, 2007 and Rookie of the Week accolades on Nov. 19 and Dec. 26, 2007.
Beasley averaged 28.5 points on 75.9 percent shooting (22-of-29) for the week with 10.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals in 32.5 minutes per game. He also connected on 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line. He began the week with a 25-point effort against Savannah State on Jan. 7 on a team-best 9-of-11 shooting from the field with 10 rebounds, two blocks and one steal in 28 minutes. He capped off the week with a game-high 32 points against Oklahoma on Saturday on 13-of-18 field goals with 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in a career-best 37 minutes. He scored the game-winning basket with 2.3 second left to give the Wildcats’ their first win in Norman since 1996 and snap a five-game losing streak in road conference openers.
His performance against the Sooners marked his sixth 30-point contest of his young career, which ties Mitch Richmond (6; 1987-88) for second-place on the school’s single-season chart. He is just one shy of the school record held by Bob Boozer (7, 1958-59) and Norris Coleman (7, 1985-86).
The former No. 1 high school recruit continues to impress this season, as he is averaging 24.8 points on 57.2 percent shooting (139-of-243), including 35.3 percent from 3-point range, with 13.1 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals in 30.5 minutes per game this season. As of Friday, he ranked among the top-5 in the nation in both scoring (fifth) and rebounding (first). He has recorded a double-double in 14 of 15 games this season and has totaled 11 games of 20 or more points.
Kansas State (11-4, 1-0 Big 12) returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when the Wildcats play host to nationally-ranked Texas A&M (15-1, 1-0 Big 12) at Bramlage Coliseum beginning at 3 p.m. CT.
