Gary Pinkel beat Mark Mangino on the field, vaulting Missouri to number-one for the first time since 1960. At the polls, though, he tied for first with the Kansas coach.

Pinkel and Mangino today were named co-Big 12 coaches of the year. Each received ten votes in balloting by a panel of conference media.

Missouri's 36-28 win over the Jayhawks on Saturday moved the Tigers to the top of the rankings and gave them their first-ever Big 12 North title. A win over Oklahoma on Saturday in the Big 12 championship game would almost certainly put MIssouri in the national championship game January seventh.

Mangino was just 19-29 at Kansas entering this season but led the Jayhawks to an 11-0 record and a number-two ranking before the
loss to Missouri.
