The third time was the charm for the Shockers, as Wichita State beat Illinois-Chicago 67 to 60 in a consolation game at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Shocks had lost their first two games in the U.S. Virgin Islands tournament.
P.J. Couisnard led the way for WSU with 15 point, while Ramon Clemente pulled down 12 rebounds.
Wichita State led by 13 points midway through the second half and held off a Flames rally that cut the lead to 63-60 with a minute to play. Gal Mekel went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final seconds to secure the victory.
Ramon Clemente had ten points and 12 rebounds for the Shockers, who also got ten points from Phillip Thomasson.
The Flames trailed by just four at halftime but could never get closer than three points.
Karl White and Jeremy Buttell finished with 13 points each for
Wichita State shot 49 percent from the floor, while holding Illinois-Chicago to 39 percent.
