WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- Gal Mekel scored 16 points as Wichita State
opened its season with a 61-56 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff
tonight.
It was the Shockers' first game under head coach Gregg Marshall.
The former Winthrop coach replaced Mark Turgeon, who left for Texas
A&M.
J.T. Durley added 12 points for the Shockers.
Marcelle Goins led Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-2) with 14 points,
Larry Williams had 12 points and William Byrd added 11 for the
Golden Lions.
Wichita State led 35-28 at halftime and took its biggest lead at
47-30 on Phillip Thomasson's 3-pointer.
