Al Oerter, the American
discus great, and former KU star who won gold medals in four straight Olympics, has
passed away at the age of 71.
Oerter won gold medals in the 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer
Olympics. He and Carl Lewis are the only track and field stars to
capture the same event in four straight Olympics.
In each of his Olympic gold medal winning throws, Oerter set an
Olympic record.
