Wichita's long-running Web.com Tour event will have a new name in 2013, the Air Capital Classic, in recognition of Wichita's unique positioning as the air capital of the world, it was announced today by tournament officials and the PGA TOUR.
A new 501(c)(3) has been formed to lead and operate the tournament, in concert with the PGA TOUR. Air Capital Charities, Inc. will be the new organization that will operate the "official event of the PGA TOUR" in Wichita and continue to generate funds for local charities. In 2012, $200,000 was donated to local charities.
Additionally, the tournament will reach out to select business and community leaders who are interested in supporting the community and the event by becoming lead sponsors via the Air Capital Ambassadors program.
"This tournament has been a part of the Wichita community and Web.com Tour since 1990 and over that time has made substantial contributions to the area in the form of direct charitable donations and economic impact,” Tournament Director Roy Turner said. “Through the help of many corporate sponsors, the event has grown into one the top events on the Web.com Tour and given Wichita international recognition.
"Now, with the changes to the Web.com Tour in place where all 50 PGA TOUR cards will come through the Tour, the global interest will certainly be enhanced," Turner added. "Our new name, the Air Capital Classic, will remind people around the U.S. and abroad that Wichita is a strong market in which to conduct business and is the Air Capital of the World."
"As one of the Web.com Tour's four original events from 1990, our players and TOUR staff always enjoy the hospitality and support they receive each year when they come to Wichita," said PGA TOUR Vice President Tim Benton. "This is a very important event to the Web.com Tour. As the Tour has grown in stature every year, so has the Air Capital Classic, along with its charitable donations. We are happy to be here today for this important announcement and pledge to work with the Board to grow the tournament's impact for years to come."
The 2013 Air Capital Classic will be played June 10-16 at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, with a purse of $650,000. Last year's event was won by Casey Wittenberg, who went on to become the Web.com Tour's leading money-winner.
