The end is very near for a local golf course that's been in operation for 40 years. The date of April 29 has been set for the course closing and the owner of Echo Hills Golf Club says that closing date is final.

Burt Henderson built all 18 holes of Echo Hills from the ground up.

“It was an old sand green golf course, built about 1931. I bought it in '72 and in 1980 I built it into what it is today,” Henderson said.

Henderson has been running the place for the last 40 years, but on April 29 he'll say goodbye to what he calls a labor of love.

“Oh yes, I’ll miss the whole place. I’ve spent almost a lifetime here,” Henderson said.

This lifelong businessman says the decision to sell came down to property value.

“In essence the developer made me an offer I couldn't refuse,” Henderson said.

The golfers who bring their clubs to Echo Hills tell us they hate to hear the course is closing and say the course has several qualities that make it stand out from the rest.

“We love playing here because it's short and it's not so busy all the time,” Golfer Gerald Matthews said.

Just because Echo Hills is going out of business doesn't mean its owner is getting out of the business. Henderson has bought a golf course in Parsons, Kansas with two other men.

“We're just moving from one spot to another that's all,” Henderson said.

Mike Loveland, the developer who bought the property, he says he's turning the area into some type of commercial retail center but he's not naming any names of the businesses that might be moving in.
