Sand Creek Station Golf Course announced today that they have been selected as the host site for the Kansas Golf Association’s (KGA) Amateur Match Play Championship which will take place June 16-22, 2012.
This event, which consists of 150 amateur golfers from across the state, is the largest and most historic amateur event that the KGA sponsors.
Previously, the tournament has been sponsored by a variety of country clubs in the Kansas-state area, including Wichita Country Club, which has hosted the event for 11 years.
“We’re thrilled that the KGA selected Sand Creek Station for the Amateur Match Play Championship,” said General Manager Chris Tuohey. “This event will help bring increased recognition to the golf course and to the communities of Newton and Harvey County.”
The Amateur Match Play Championship has been a career-changing event to many young golfers. Cameron Bishop took home the title in 2008 after losing to two-time champion, Gary Woodland, in 2007. Bishop won the prestigious tournament and was awarded KGA’s Player of the Year within the same year.
Starting in 1908, the Amateur Match Play Championship has been held every year except for the three years (1943-1945) in which it was cancelled due to World War II.
