KEY GAME Trinity Catholic at Garden Plain October 15

Trinity, twice a loser at regionals to Garden Plain in 2008 and 2005, wants a shootout, as it could mean trouble for Garden Plain, which didn’t survive such a game against Collegiate last season. The loser might be better for the playoffs, however, that is if they’re both able to get past solid teams at Sedgwick and Halstead. Conway Springs likely awaits the winner at regionals.

Garden Plain had its lowest win total (8) in 2009 since 2001, though they still have not lost more than two games in a single season since then. The Owls’ streak of six consecutive sub-state berths ended in the opening round of the playoffs at Collegiate, which beat them 51-20, just two seasons after losing 63-0 to Garden Plain’s 2007 state title team.

There are few threats on the schedule other than Conway Springs, which has beaten Garden Plain twice in a row. The Owls beat Conway five straight starting in 2005 but lost to them at sub-state in 2008 and last season in district play. The Garden-Conway game will not have district implications in 2010, as the Owls enter District 10, which includes Trinity Catholic.

The Celtics, a 33-28 winner over Conway Springs at regionals, went 11-1 and made sectionals in 2009. The return at quarterback of Derek Racette, who threw a 77-yard touchdown pass on fourth down and 28 in the final minute to beat Conway, promises more heroics for 2010. Trinity won eight of nine regular season games by 34
points or more.

Sedgwick completed its third consecutive winning season in 2009 and, after Racette, returns the district’s most productive offensive player, Trent Stucky, who accounted for over 1,900 yards at quarterback. Halstead, which returns its leading rusher and passer, gave Trinity by far its most difficult regular season game, losing 14-8 in Week 9. –Tom Witherspoon
