The Dodge City Tournament of Champions is relevant once again, after hosting one of its weakest fields in history last season. Holcomb, of Class 3A, was the lone future state tournament team in the 2009 field other than host Dodge City.

The 2010 tournament field is loaded. Defending Class 6A state champ Heights and two-time state champ this decade Wichita East will represent the City League at Dodge. Hutchinson, the 2001 Class 6A champ, Gardner-Edgerton and Shawnee Mission South, both former state champs, Manhattan, the No. 1-seeded team in the 2008 Class 6A state tournament and Hays round out the field.

Heights and East, already scheduled for two league games, should add a third meeting with one another before the postseason, provided they beat all other comers at the Dodge tourney.

Hutch, which upset No. 1 undefeated Heights at the McPherson mid-season tournament last season, can earn another shot at the champs this year.

Heights, East and Manhattan will all play in the same eight-team sub-state in the postseason.

The Tournament of Champions, site of many small-school upsets of larger schools over the years, moves to an all Class 6A and 5A field.
