Many have tried. None have succeeded in bringing football back to Wichita State University. The school has been without a program for more than 25 years. One WSU student says he is about to change that.

Joshua Wills is only a sophomore at Wichita State, but that is not stopping the computer engineering and entrepreneurship major from dreaming big.

Noticing a lack of college life among his WSU peers, Wills set out to change that.

"I was looking at ways of solving that. One is campus housing. The other is to create a football team."

For nearly three decades, the school has been without a football program.

In order to bring it back, Wills says he first has to think small.

"All the other attempts were going through the athletic department, which is ruled by the NCAA," said Wills.

With that, comes rules and regulations, and a lot of funding.

A club football team takes all those out of the equation, and still allows students the opportunity to play and watch college football.

In fact, the team will more-than-likely join the Intercollegiate Club Football Federation, which will put WSU up against teams from Ohio State, Miami, Marquette and Xavier.

Wills hopes to pick-up most of the players from 2-year colleges, like Butler.

"A lot of the players there, they won't get picked up, so they need a university to go to, and we can use those community colleges as feeder schools," said Wills.

Someday, Wills hopes to grow the program even more.

"The overall goal, is for it to be an NCAA Division I football team," said Wills.

An information session about WSU club football will be held May 30 at 6 PM inside the Heskett Center.
