Chynna Turner's 3-pointer from the left corner with 15:26 remaining in the second half capped a 9-2 Wichita State run allowing the Shockers to break free of the visitors from Grambling, La. The 3-pointer from Turner also gave the senior from Houston, Texas her 800th career point. Jazimen Gordon, a senior from West Memphis, Ark., also reached the 800-point mark Tuesday night on the Shockers first basket of the second half.
Jessica Diamond scored a team-high 19 points and added six rebounds to help snap the Shocker's three-game losing streak. Sophomore Kelsey Jacobs had career-highs with 10 points and three blocks for WSU.
The Shockers took a 25-21 lead into the halftime break despite shooting 35% from the field and committing 15 turnovers. The Shockers gained the halftime advantage forcing 14 Grambling State turnovers and used a 21-10 rebounding advantage, including 10 offensive to offset the early struggles on the offensive end. Diamond led the way with eight points for WSU including a pair of 3-pointers.
Wichita State shot 54% in the second half and held the Tigers to 19%.
The Shockers are next in action Tue., Dec. 4 at 7:05 p.m. as they play the second in a series of four consecutive home games against intrastate foe Kansas State.
