Undefeated Jets Sting Hornets In Overtime, 69-62

Marquis Cuyler got things rolling for the night with a two point basket at the 19:02 mark. The Jets remained ahead until a basket by Gavin Brown gave Emporia State a 9-7 advantage with 16:50 remaining in the first half. The Hornets continued to strenghten their lead until a dunk by Darrell Traylor at the 11 minute mark to get the Jets within five. A three-pointer from Bobby Wesley made the game 23-21 Hornets with six minutes left in the first half. The teams continued to trade baskets, but it was Emporia State that led 30-25 at halftime.

The second half was one for the recordbooks, as Newman came back from a 14-point deficit to force an overtime. After trading off for the first few minutes, the Jets remained within two after a pair of free throws from Ryan Mesh with 17 minutes remaining in the game. The Hornets then surged ahead, going on a 12-point unanswered run that made the score 48-34 at the 11 minute mark. The Jets charged back in the next few minutes, including 3-pointers from Darrell Traylor and Ryan McCarthy and a steal by Bobby Wesley to get the Jets within five with six minutes left. Another two-for-two effort by Ryan Mesh from the charity stripe made the score 55-52 Hornets with 2:43 on the clock. Newman tied the score up at 56 with a perfect effort from the line by Marquis Cuyler. A jump ball caused by a trapped ball between the backboard and rim ended the game 56-56, forcing a five minute overtime period.

A slam dunk by Darrell Traylor gave the Jets a two point advantage, but a quick basket from Emporia State tied the game up with 3:25 remaining in overtime. Back-to-back baskets by Shamar Acuay made the score 62-58 Newman with 2:25 left. The Jets never looked back, and the final two-pointer by Bobby Wesley gave Newman the 69-62 victory.

Darrell Traylor led the Jets with 20 points, and Marquis Cuyler joined him in the double digits with a 12 point effort on the night. Frankie Drayton had 3 steals while Bobby Wesley led the Jets with 6 assists.

As a team, Newman shot 37 percent (24-64) from the field and 20 percent (4-20) from behind the arc. The Jets were 85 percent (17-20) from the charity stripe. Emporia outrebounded Newman 41-32.

With the win, the undefeated Jets remain 5-0 for the season. Newman returns to action on Thursday when they take on the McMurray University at 7:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
