Wichita State used eight strong innings from Josh Smith and a five-hit game from Casey Gillaspie to defeat Bradley 7-1 in game one of a three-game series.
Smith went eight innings and gave up just one run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Gillaspie went 5-for-5 with an RBI and a double, while Johnny Coy went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a home run.
David Compitello's solo home run in the third gave BU an early 1-0 lead.
The Shockers finally put something together in the sixth. Micah Green led off with a single and advanced to second on an infield single from Johnny Coy. Casey Gillaspie doubled to drive in Green and Don Lambert singled to score Coy. After a walk to Ryan Hege, Tyler Baker singled to left field to score Gillaspie and Taylor Doggett's sac fly put the Shocks in front 4-1.
WSU added another run in the seventh on an RBI single from Josh Halbert for a 5-1 lead.
With two outs in the eighth inning, Green singled and Coy hit his seventh home run of the season for the final score of 7-1.
The Shockers and Braves play game two of the series at 2 p.m. on Sat., May 12.
