Wichita State scored five runs in the sixth inning to defeat Indiana State 5-4 and advance to the championship game of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
The Shockers will face Illinois State at 7:07 p.m. on Sat., May 25.
Garrett Bayliff went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Micah Green went 1-for-4 with two RBI and Mikel Mucha went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Reliever Foster Vielock earned the win as he pitched one inning and allowed two runs on one hit. Reliever Brandon Peterson earned his 10th save with 2.2 shutout innings.
Indiana State took advantage of Shocker wildness in the sixth. After a leadoff hit by pitch and a single, Mike Fitzgerald walked to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly from Connor McClain put the Sycamores on the board and a single from Jordan Pearson gave the Sycamores a 2-0 lead before Foster Vielock got a strikeout and flyout to end the threat.
The Shockers answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dayne Parker singled to lead off the inning and after a walk to Erik Harbutz, Parker was thrown out at third on a bunt. A wild pitch moved Harbutz and Tanner Dearman to second and third and Garrett Bayliff singled to right field to tie the score at two. After a walk to Tyler Baker, Casey Gillaspie grounded out to advance both runners. The Sycamores intentionally walked Johnny Coy and then Micah Green singled up the middle to give the Shocks a 4-2 lead. Mikel Mucha followed with an RBI single to right field to put the Shocks in front 5-2.
Robby Ort homered to right field in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-3 and the Sycamores used a hit by pitch, walk and single to add on another run to make the score 5-4.
