It didn't take long for Danny Manning to
realize the lineage he was joining when he got hired as Tulsa's new
In the coaches' locker room that he'll now occupy, the former
NBA All-Star noticed the pictures of Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith
and Bill Self -- all three who went on to win national championships
after their time coaching the Golden Hurricane.
Manning was formally introduced as Tulsa's new coach Wednesday,
two days after wrapping up his tenure as a Kansas assistant coach
when the Jayhawks lost to Kentucky in the national championship
Manning says he plans for the Golden Hurricane to play up-tempo,
with a motion offense and pressure man-to-man defense that
shouldn't give up easy baskets.
Bill Self offered a statement about Manning Wednesday morning:
"“Although we’ve known this for several days, Danny being named officially in a press conference at the University of Tulsa is a great thrill not only for him but for all of us. We’re so happy for Danny because in large part we understand what a great job the University of Tulsa basketball position is. He’ll represent the school in a first-class way. He’ll recruit good kids that can play and he’ll coach their tails off. He’ll have Tulsa competing for championships in a very short time. I personally think it will be a great marriage for both parties.”
