Kris Gardner took the loss after pitching 2/3 innings giving up four hits and three runs.
The Wildcats got on the board first after Jared King’s three-run homerun to left field in the first inning. It was King’s fifth homerun of the season and 31st RBI.
The Shockers threatened to score in the second after a leadoff walk for Casey Gillaspie to start the inning. Gillaspie stole second and then advanced to third on a Harbutz grounder to second, but the Kansas State defense stepped up and threw the next three batters out to end the inning.
Clayton Dalrymple doubled through the left side to start off the fourth inning for the Wildcats and Shane Conlon hit an RBI single to right field that scored Dalrymple, giving Kansas State a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats’ hot hitting continued in the fifth inning when Jon Davis singled to center field, followed by a single up the middle by Austin Fisher. But the Shocker defense came up big once again and retired the next three batters.
Wichita State got their first hit of the night from Micah Green in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, saving a no-hit rally from Kansas State but the Wildcats prevented the Shockers from getting the run in after Sean Moore grounded out to the pitcher.
Garrett Bayliff gave Wichita State a spark in the bottom of the eighth with a double to left field and scored on a ground out to second from Gillaspie to cut the lead to 4-1.
