But the winning kick almost never happened as Wearing has been petitioning the Salina school district since his freshman year to be a dual-sport athlete. That determination on and off the field finally paid off as he was granted his request to play both sports his senior year.

"He's a determined kid, it shows up, I've always told these kids what you are off the field shows up on the field and that's case with Chris. He works and fights through the game and that's what it took to get something like this done. When you're talking about going through that red tape of getting to be a dual-athlete provision within our school district," said Head Soccer Coach Dave Ouderkirk.
