The Wichita East Blue Aces are off to a 4-0 start and the rest of the GWAL is on high alert as the Aces are led by our Athletes of the Week, Zach Jackson and Xavier Kelly.
"It's good to be 4-0 I guess, but we have a lot to work on still. We're not satisfied," said Jackson.
East High is not satisfied because the players know how much potential they have. It's hard to ignore with Jackson leading the team in scoring. His points come in highlight-making haymakers to the opponent. At times, he surprises even himself.
"I haven't been very athletic my whole life, so this is new. It all started in the gym. When I started lifting, I was not on the weights at all and someone forced me to get on the weights. Coach was always talking stuff, saying I was skinny so I had to get on the weights," Jackson said.
As Jackson has done more than hold his own weight, his main running mate at East has been Xavier Kelly, who was 9-9 from the field in East's 58-57 win over Heights on Tuesday night. Just a sophomore, Kelly almost never made it on the floor for East this season.
"I came from Savannah, Georgia. My dad was there so I moved with him for a little bit and I kind of missed Kansas a little bit so I figured I'd come back," Kelly said.
The East High students welcome Kelly back each gameday, crossing their arms to make an "X" upon his being introduced. They honor a team that could be raising trophies by season's end.
"We're very capable," said Jackson. "We know we haven't hit our peak yet."
