Derby and Buhler are our state football champions from KAKEland. But one team put its hopes for a third state championship on one single play. For that, they are our athletes of the week.
The Salina South Cougars trailed Blue Valley-Stilwell 24-6 at halftime of the 5A championship game in Emporia. But they mounted an amazing comeback, scoring three touchdowns in the second half. The third touchdown put them just an extra point away from a tied score and a likely overtime period. But the Cougars wanted more than overtime.
"We wanted to win the game," Salina South Head Coach Sam Sellers said. "We had all of the momentum right there and we went for the win and came up short."
Instead of kicking the extra point, Sellers let his team go for a two-point conversion, calling a trick play - a reverse pass that fell short in the end zone, sealing the win for Blue Valley.
"Our kids are heartbroken to come up a point short but I am so proud of that second half. They gave us everything and that's all I can ask for," said Sellers.
When asked if he would make the call all over again if he could, Sellers responded: "Absolutely."
Salina South finished the season 10-3.
