Nick Nolting has been wrestling for as long as he can remember. He started on the mat before most other kids, and he reaps the rewards on his way to a possible shot at a state title.
He is 22-2 for Bishop Carroll and is ranked third in Class 5A behind fellow 220 pounders Corey Atkins of Goddard and Ben Ewing of St. Thomas Aquinas.
Nolting pinned his way through the entire GWAL tournament, capping off his City League title with a victory over East's Carlos Brown. Now he has set his sights on the regional tournament on Saturday. Atkins (27-1) will be there waiting.
Nolting finished the 2013 State tournament in 5th place but his goal is a title in 2014. He knows the feeling of what it takes to be the best, as a defensive lineman on the 2012 State champion football team. But his primary focus has always been wrestling.
"Football is its own thing. But when you're on the mat with the other guy, it's like everything else just blanks out. It's just you and him. It's a cool feeling," Nolting said.
The regional championship begin at 9:00 am on Saturday at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School.
