A week before Black Friday and already deep cuts are everywhere.
A tough economy is putting retailers on edge, giving shoppers a few advantages this year.
We took economic experts from Wichita State Kasey Jolly and Debra Franklin shopping.
"Clearly retail sales have been down for the year. A lot of retailers are expecting to have a big push for the holiday season with deep sales and the like," said Jolly.
Many big chain retail stores are hoping to cash in by enticing early birds.
For example Target is already putting some of its hottest items on sale. A 26-inch flat screen TV is just $300.
"We suggest that if you see good buys, make those purchases at that time," said Franklin.
Experts say merchants got burned badly last year when they were left with a lot of unsold merchandise after Christmas. So this year, retailers have up to 30 percent less merchandise stocked for the year-end gift buying season.
"This year they are operating on a lean model, and they won't have as much," said Jolly.
Our experts give this list of advice to stretch your holiday dollar.
1. Buy when you see the deal, because inventory is down this year.
2. Set a budget and make a list.
3. Do your research, especially on big ticket items.
4. Buy in bulk. Stores are offering buy one get one free or for 1/2 price.
5. When you are done with your holiday list, stop.
6. Give the gift of time or make a gift. Not every present needs to be purchased.
If you really want to see the deals, the Black Friday ads will come out Sunday.
