A Wichita teen is being questioned by police after officers said she made a prank call about a school shooting. Officers responded to the call at Pleasant Valley Middle School, 2220 W. 29th Street North, around 11:30 a.m.

"When you get a call like that at a school, with everything that's happened over the years, we take stuff like that very serious," said Wichita Police Sargeant Jeff Davis. "So she is in some serious trouble."

USD 259 district spokesperson Susan Arensman says she believes one student dialed 911 and handed the phone to a friend as a joke. The student heard in the dispatch call may not have known that she was actually on the line with emergency services.

In 911 tapes released to KAKE News, the caller appeared to be crying.

Dispatch: Sedgwick County 911, what city is your emergency in?

Caller: I want to report a shooting at Pleasant Valley Middle School. (weeping)

Dispatch: I'm sorry what?

Officers traced the telephone number. The school principal recognized the telephone number belonged to one of her students and quickly went to find the girl.

The student was taken into custody, but a parent who arrived at the school after things had calmed down says she didn't even realize anything had happened.

"Your kids are supposed to be safe when they go to school," said Tina Adams. "You don't want to hear about a shooting and then it's a prank??? That's not funny."
