Wichita’s urban-serving community and connection between higher education and industry partnerships sparked Glen Hahn Cope to take the next step in her career.

Hahn Cope is he first of five candidates vying to become the next president at Wichita State University. President Donald Beggs announced plans to retire earlier this year. He has served as the university’s leader since 1999.

Hahn Cope said she was attracted to Wichita because of its size, diversity and how the university gives back to the community.

“Where I am now is really an urban-serving university,” she said. “I don’t really want to go to a university that isn’t engaged in its community.”

Hahn Cope has served as the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Missouri in St. Louis since 2004. She has a background in public policy, politics and economics. Hahn Cope received her Ph.D. in Public Administration from Ohio State University.

Despite a strong academic background, Hahn Cope said athletics can bring enthusiasm to schools. She said she grew up near Notre Dame, and saw how athletics brought prominence to the university.

“Athletics brings the campus together in a way,” she said. “But the students should be student-athletes, first.”

The Kansas Board of Regents will name Begg’s successor in the coming weeks.
