Salina police say 18 year old David Burke is accused of having “inappropriate contact” with another cadet at the school, who is a minor.

Officers were called out to the school last Friday.

“Well through the investigation speaking with the victim as well as the witnesses, we developed who our suspect was. We spoke with him and worked our case,” Lt. Scott Siemsen with the Salina Police Department said.

Lt. Siemsen says later that day, Burke was arrested on one count of sexual battery.

The school's president tells us Burke is a cadet leader.

“So he would have been part of a team of young men that provided leadership to a group of 40 give or take,” St. John's Military Academy President Andrew England said.

But after Burke was released from jail, he was stripped of his leadership responsibilities and moved to another company so he wouldn't have contact with the victim. He has been suspended and will be sent home to Virginia.

“We work hard to provide an environment where boys can learn and grow and develop, where they're safe, where they feel encouraged,” England said.

England says the school will work with the police as the investigation continues but he says he hopes for the sake of the students still at St. John's, Burke's arrest doesn't tarnish the school's name.

“We're talking about the misbehavior of one boy, or the alleged misbehavior of one boy and there's an awful lot of them up here working hard and doing things the right way,” England said.

Burke has not been charged yet.

A Kansas military school says it has suspended an 18-year-old cadet leader who was arrested last week on allegations of sexual battery against a younger student at its Salina campus.

St. John's Military School said Tuesday that the cadet's leadership responsibilities were taken away and he was reassigned to another company while arrangements were being made to send him home to Virginia.

The student has been identified as 18-year-old David Burke. He has not yet been charged.

President Andy England says the school immediately started an investigation and, based on its findings, notified police and the state's child welfare agency.

The incident comes as St. John's fights a lawsuit filed by 11 ex-cadets alleging a culture of abuse existed at the school.
